District Librarians Present Third ‘Bresnahan Book Award’

Tuesday, March 6, 2018

The Liverpool Central School District and its library LCSD recently presented the third-ever Bresnahan Book Award winner.media specialists recently celebrated the life of fellow library media specialist Lori Bresnahan during the third-ever Bresnahan Book Award Ceremony at the Barnes & Noble on Route 31.

And the winner was… Winnie: The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh written by Sally M. Walker and illustrated by Jonathan D. Voss.

The nominees for the third-ever Bresnahan Book Award were selected because they also are nominated for this year’s Charlotte Award, which was one of Bresnahan’s favorites. Every other year, the New York State Reading Association presents the Charlotte Award, which recognizes books that represent diversity, demonstrate different genres and formats, and appeal to children as much as they appeal to their teachers.

Much like the Charlotte Award, LCSD elementary students read and voted for the winner of the third-ever Bresnahan Book Award. LCSD librarians used the Twitter hashtag #LCSDVotes4Books to capture the excitement. Each book also was read by celebrity readers during the special event.

The Bresnahan Book Award was established to honor the life of Bresnahan, who passed away in March 2013. One of her great passions was sharing books with children, and the library media specialists decided that there was no better way to keep her love of literature alive than by creating a book award in her honor.

Children's author and illustrator Salina Yoon, whose book Penguin and Pinecone was the inaugural Bresnahan Book Award winner in 2014, spent the week visiting all nine LCSD elementary schools as a guest author. She also was on hand during the ceremony to read her book Be a Friend, meet local children and sign books for them.

At the start of the ceremony, the LCSD library media specialists received a special surprise from Barnes & Noble District Training Store Manager Tammy Casciano when she announced that store employees and patrons were donating 250 books to LCSD school libraries. The books will be added to special bookshelves dedicated in Bresnahan’s memory.
